ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr Rendani I. Manenzhe is a medical scientist, author, public health advocate, speaker, and servant-leader, committed to building a healthier future through science, education, and action.

Dr Rendani has spent his career at the intersection of science, healthcare, research, and public health. His journey began in medical microbiology and infectious diseases, then expanded into clinical research, healthcare, and the growing global challenge of non-communicable diseases. Today, he is the founder and director of Baobab Health & Innovation Group (BHI Group), an African health and innovation group focused on turning knowledge into meaningful health impact.

He is the author of Diabetes: The Load Shedding of our Health, a book that uses the familiar experience of load shedding or a blackout to challenge how society understands diabetes and the broader health crisis. Through his writing, speaking, training, and community engagement, Dr Manenzhe seeks to make complex health and scientific knowledge accessible to individuals, families, workplaces, healthcare professionals, institutions, and communities.

Born in Madadzhi village in Limpopo, South Africa, Dr Manenzhe's academic journey took him from the University of Limpopo, where he graduated Cum Laude in Medical Science, to the University of Cape Town, where he obtained an MSc in Medicine and a PhD in Medicine, specialising in Medical Microbiology. His scientific career included research into infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance before he broadened his focus to the prevention and management of chronic diseases.

Through BHI Group and his broader work, Dr Manenzhe is helping to build a platform rooted in Africa yet designed to contribute to global health conversations. His work is guided by a simple belief that scientific knowledge should not remain confined to laboratories, journals, or conference rooms – it should reach people, families, communities, and the places where health decisions are made. He is passionate about health equity, prevention, health education, scientific integrity, and empowering people to take meaningful action before disease becomes a crisis.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Diabetes is no longer a distant health problem. It is a growing blackout, and too many of us are living in the dark.

Diabetes – The Load Shedding of our Health invites you to see diabetes differently. Using the familiar reality of load shedding or blackouts as a powerful metaphor, Dr Manenzhe takes you on a journey through the science, stories, choices, systems and circumstances that shape our health.

Drawing on his experience as a medical scientist, researcher and public health advocate, Dr Manenzhe makes complex health information accessible and relevant to everyday life. He explores diabetes and other chronic diseases, including obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, which increasingly affect individuals worldwide.

Diabetes – The Load Shedding of our Health is not simply a book about disease. It is a conversation about what happens before diagnosis. It challenges us to think of health as something we build long before we need it. Every meal, movement, health check, night’s sleep, decision and conversation can become an investment in our future health – a kind of ‘health emergency fund’ that our bodies may draw on when life becomes difficult. Through science, powerful analogies and practical reflections, this book asks important questions:

  • Are we waiting for the lights to go out before acting?
  • What are we ‘depositing’ into our health today?
  • What can we do, both individually and collectively, to prevent the next blackout?

Whether you are living with diabetes, caring for someone with it, worried about your family's future, working in healthcare, leading an organisation, serving a community, or simply trying to understand your own health, this book offers a different way to think about prevention, responsibility and hope.

Diabetes – The Load Shedding of our Health is an invitation to move from darkness to light, from awareness to action, and from waiting for illness to investing in health. The lights may flicker, and warning signs may appear, but a blackout is not always inevitable.
